Reading messages is 10% of it. Closing is the other 90%.
The accounts that pay well measure one thing: revenue added per chatter, per shift. Response speed and message volume are inputs, not the scoreboard.

Under $2 to $4 an hour, flat, for an 8-hour shift, five days a week, no commission. This is not a rare horror story, investigative reporting has documented it as standard at the cut-rate end of this market, concentrated in the Philippines and similar low-cost hiring pools.
Better shops
$5 to $15 an hour base, sometimes with a small commission on what you personally close. Wildly inconsistent shop to shop, and there is no verified industry-wide average. Anyone who quotes you one confident number is guessing.
What actually moves the number
Commission on a real, well-run account can outearn any base rate, but only if the account has genuine spenders and the split is honest. That upside is real, and it is also the part every recruiting ad oversells. Ask for specifics before you trust a figure.
